> URBAN GARDEN OF QUINTA DA ARMADA

The location of the Quinta da Armada urban garden is neither obvious nor easily visible within Braga’s recent urban fabric. Nestled between the Braga Parque shopping centre and a residential building, this garden was immediately recognised and conceptualised as a true oasis in the city by LIMIT Architecture Studio — a Braga-based architecture team. For LIMIT, this oasis is a space for self-sustained food production, learning, mental refuge, community gathering, and the sharing of seeds and agricultural knowledge.

With the aim of promoting the creation of more urban gardens in Braga and expanding the knowledge and practices from this garden to other areas of the city, LIMIT propose the Mobile Seedbed: a modular device made from polycarbonate panels with a curved metal sheet roof, designed to function both statically and in motion. When static, the seedbed can be broken into smaller units, functioning as mini greenhouses for seed germination — available for use by the gardeners of Quinta da Armada. When mobile, the structure is mounted onto a trailer, allowing it to travel through the city with an educational purpose: to raise awareness of the ecological benefits of urban gardens, their positive impact on users' health and well-being, and to distribute seeds to other neighbourhoods.
More than a one-off installation, the Mobile Seedbed is conceived as a pilot project with the potential for expansion — capable of creating an ecological trail that spreads seeds, gatherings, and environmental awareness throughout the city and its gardens, enriching both soil and community with biodiversity and shared well-being.

LIMIT ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

Limit Architecture Studio is an architecture practice based in Braga, founded in 2017 by Ivo Vaz Barbosa, Ricardo Acosta and Tomé Capa. Their work is grounded in the value of process and narrative, seeking spatial and constructive solutions that combine efficiency, durability, and elegance. The studio develops projects across a range of scales and programmes, from new builds to rehabilitation, as well as design and artistic interventions. Recent projects include Casa Middleyard, which explores the relationship between privacy and outdoor space, and Casa Ótima, a modular and optimised proposal for affordable housing. The studio also runs ITEM Cultural, a platform dedicated to artistic promotion and exhibitions in the centre of Braga.
